CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Safek wasn't sure what to make of the woman he had as his captive.

She currently sat, eyes shut and hands bound behind her, on a chair that Finn the merchant had supplied, although he wasn’t in the room now. Perhaps he didn’t want to watch whatever Safek would do next. Her golden hair fell forward over her face, while she wore grey clothes in which weapons had been carefully hidden.

Safek had set those in a pile to one side so that she wouldn't be able to use them on him.

Not that she had shown any signs of doing it so far. The woman had tried to talk the three idiots out of attacking. She had clearly not wanted to be there. Had not attacked him with the same murderous intent they had.

But she had been there, she'd been helping them. Which raised the question of what Safek should do with her.

Normally, that would have been a simple question for one of the Janden. They killed their enemies. Had this woman been caught trying to raid the Snake Clan's lands, she would already be dead. That, or she would be claimed as a slave by the tribe. Safek had no doubt that Tak, the new chief of the Janden, would already have her impaled on a spike or waiting in chains in his tent.

Safek felt his hands tightening into fists at that thought. "I am not like Tak. I do not serve Tak."

He had seen the things Tak did, when he’d looked out over the walls. Safek would not be that. Not anymore. He would not help the Janden to slaughter these people.

He walked over to the woman and studied her face. She was pretty, with sharp features. He watched her breathing. He wondered what had driven her to a life of thievery. Was it poverty? Or were there darker motives at play?

Safek sighed, realizing he was getting distracted. He needed to focus on the task at hand. He had to figure out what to do with her.

"I know that you're not really unconscious," Safek said. "Your breathing changed almost a minute ago."

The woman's eyes snapped open, glaring up at him with hatred. She had the most piercing blue eyes.

"You hit me with a shield!" she snapped.

"You were in the middle of robbing this house," Safek countered. He paused for a moment. "Your friends are dead."

She looked at him like she was trying to decide if he was attempting to scare her or not.

"They weren't my friends."

"But you still came here with them." Safek looked her up and down. "What's your name?"

The woman laughed bitterly. "Trying to be friends, barbarian? All right, I'm Thea. Is knowing that going to stop you from torturing me to death?"

Safek smiled slightly at that. "Is that what you think is happening here? Oh, and I'm Safek."

"Like I care," Thea said. "What are you, a spy sent into the city by the king of the Janden? So, the way I see it, one of two scenarios is going to play out here.
